Lumen Internet On-Demand: what it is and how to control the cost

A practical guide to Lumen Internet On-Demand, its hourly and term billing models, bandwidth changes, fit criteria, and how Vigilis Flux schedules eligible connections.

What Lumen Internet On-Demand is

Lumen Internet On-Demand is dedicated internet delivered through Lumen’s Network-as-a-Service portfolio. Lumen says customers can activate or deactivate the service through Lumen Connect or APIs, manage supported bandwidth options, and use consumption-based or term-based pricing.

That makes the product different from a conventional fixed-rate circuit. The service record, available capacity tiers, billing method, and commercial terms can support operational changes without replacing the underlying connection.

The important limitation is eligibility. A company may have many Lumen services, but only connections sold and configured as supported on-demand services can use the controls described here.

How bandwidth and billing interact

Lumen publishes hourly pay-as-you-go pricing as well as term-based options. Its service schedule says hourly charges are based on the selected bandwidth level, not the amount of traffic that happens to cross the connection.

That distinction matters. Reducing traffic alone does not lower an hourly bill. The selected service capacity or active service state must change under the applicable billing model.

For monthly billing, Lumen’s current support documentation says customers can add bandwidth and later decrease it to the original contracted level. Do not assume a monthly connection can move below that contracted baseline. Confirm the allowed tiers and billing effect before creating a schedule.

Where scheduling fits

Vigilis Flux stores an approved capacity schedule for each eligible connection and applies supported changes through the carrier workflow. It can restore full capacity before a site opens, lower the selected rate when demand is predictably light, and keep an audit trail of each change.

A schedule is most useful when demand follows a repeatable pattern:

  • Branches and offices with known operating hours
  • Seasonal businesses with planned peak periods
  • Data transfers, migrations, or events with defined windows
  • Recovery sites that need controlled capacity exceptions

Connections with unpredictable demand, fixed product terms, or no supported lower tier need a different approach.

Evaluation checklist

Before scheduling a Lumen Internet On-Demand connection, confirm:

  1. The service is an eligible Lumen Internet On-Demand product.
  2. The current billing method and contract allow the intended change.
  3. The available bandwidth tiers meet the site’s minimum and peak requirements.
  4. Monitoring data covers the full operating cycle.
  5. The owner and approver for capacity changes are documented.
  6. An exception process exists for off-hours demand.
  7. The expected billing effect is modeled before production changes begin.

Use the Bandwidth Savings Calculator to model the schedule, then validate the result against the connection’s current Lumen order and pricing.

Common questions

Lumen Internet On-Demand is a dedicated internet service in the Lumen Network-as-a-Service portfolio. Eligible services can be activated, managed, and disconnected through Lumen Connect or Lumen APIs.
Lumen publishes consumption-based hourly pricing and term-based options. The applicable rate and the effect of a bandwidth change depend on the service order and billing method, so review the commercial terms for each connection.
Vigilis Flux can schedule supported Lumen Internet On-Demand connections, record approved changes, and restore the selected capacity before a site's demand returns.
No. The service must be an eligible Internet On-Demand connection with supported bandwidth options. Fixed-rate and other Lumen products should be evaluated separately.
