The short answer: Lumen IoD, now sold as Lumen Intelligent Internet, bills each hour at the rate of the bandwidth tier a connection is set to. On October 14, 2026, Lumen listed 1 Gbps from $1.06 an hour and 100 Mbps from $0.47. A 1 Gbps connection left on for a 730-hour month costs $773.80, used or not.
Lumen renamed Internet On-Demand to Intelligent Internet in September 2026. The table below has every rate Lumen publishes, including $0.37 for 50 Mbps, $3.93 for 10 Gbps, and $0.10 for a 1 Mbps backup connection.
The hourly rates Lumen publishes
These are the rates on Lumen’s Intelligent Internet product page on October 14, 2026. Lumen calls each one a “starting at” price. The last column is what a connection costs if it stays at that tier for an average 730-hour month.
| Bandwidth | Hourly rate | Left on all month (730 hours) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Mbps (backup) | $0.10 | $73.00 |
| 50 Mbps | $0.37 | $270.10 |
| 100 Mbps | $0.47 | $343.10 |
| 1 Gbps | $1.06 | $773.80 |
| 10 Gbps | $3.93 | $2,868.90 |
Three things to know about this table:
- The rates are per connection. Lumen says its listed rates are fixed hourly, per connection, in US dollars, for eligible US business customers, and exclude taxes and fees.
- Not every tier is on the page. The service runs from 1 Mbps to 100 Gbps. Lumen publishes these five rates. For any other tier, price it in Lumen Connect or through Lumen’s pricing API.
- Rates change. Lumen lowered the listed rate for the 1 Mbps backup tier between September 24 and October 6, 2026. Check Lumen’s page for today’s figure before you build a budget on it.
How an hourly bill is worked out
Each hour is charged at the rate of the tier the connection is set to during that hour. The month’s bandwidth charge is the sum of those hours.
A connection that never moves is simple: 730 hours at $1.06 is $773.80.
A connection that moves is the same sum in two parts. Take a site that is busy 12 hours a day, 22 weekdays a month. That is 264 business hours out of 730. At 1 Gbps in business hours and 100 Mbps the rest of the time, the month is 264 hours at $1.06 plus 466 hours at $0.47, which is $498.86.
The point that catches people out: the charge follows the tier, not the traffic. A quiet connection at 1 Gbps costs the same as a busy one. Using less does not bill less. Only changing the tier does.
What the hourly rate leaves out
The hourly rate is the bandwidth charge only. A full model needs these too:
- The Lumen Fabric Port. Lumen says Intelligent Internet starts with a Lumen Fabric Port, and that the port has its own minimum term and early termination charges.
- Taxes and fees. Lumen’s listed rates exclude them.
- Security add-ons. DDoS Essentials and Lumen Defender are priced separately.
- Term pricing. Lumen also sells a 12 to 60 month option with a fixed monthly rate for a committed bandwidth floor. That price is quoted by Lumen, not published.
What the hourly model means for the bill
Because the charge follows the tier, the saving comes from the hours a connection spends at a lower tier. Using the same site as above, busy for 264 hours out of 730:
| Schedule | Monthly cost | Saving |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Gbps, always on | $773.80 | |
| 1 Gbps in business hours, 100 Mbps otherwise | $498.86 | $274.94 (35.5%) |
| 1 Gbps in business hours, 50 Mbps otherwise | $452.26 | $321.54 (41.6%) |
| 10 Gbps, always on | $2,868.90 | |
| 10 Gbps in business hours, 1 Gbps otherwise | $1,531.48 | $1,337.42 (46.6%) |
These use Lumen’s starting-at hourly rates and leave out Fabric Port and add-on charges. Your own figures depend on your rates, your hours, and the low tier the site can live with. See how to reduce a Lumen Internet On-Demand bill for how to find them.
Where Vigilis Flux fits
Somebody, or something, has to move the tier down at night and back up before the site opens. Vigilis Flux schedules bandwidth on Lumen Internet On-Demand and Lumen Intelligent Internet connections. It runs on a schedule, for sites with set hours, or on Auto, where it follows measured utilization. Every change is recorded.
Vigilis Flux is a $15 per service, per month add-on to any Vigilis plan. The price covers both modes and there is no platform fee. You can model a connection against its rate tiers in the Bandwidth Savings Calculator before anything changes in production.
